Andechs Monastery

Andechs Monastery

The Counts of Andechs were a very Catholic family, producing 17 saints and blessed. In 1132, they began building a church (a magnificent rococo church). A monastery was added later. The Counts brought a piece of wood from the cross of Christ, whips, reed sceptre and a piece of the crown of thorns as relics. Andechs also has the largest collection of votive candles in Europe. Andechs is still one of the largest pilgrimage sites in Germany today.

But the monastery is not only interesting from a religious point of view. The Andechs monastery brewery is one of the last genuine monastery breweries. Concerts, exhibitions and other events are also held regularly in the monastery. Another special attraction is the Christmas market on the 2nd weekend of Advent.

With its brewery, “Bräustüberl”, monastery tavern and different kinds of rich cultural offerings, Andechs Monastery is known as a place to come together The “Florian Stadl” (formerly a pigsty and hay store) is a popular conference venue and now also a center of cultural activity. The Orff Festival is held there every year.
